Salt Lake City -- staking claim in 1868 as home of the nation’s first department store -- provides a cornucopia of shopping villages, upscale malls, booming factory outlets, and other shopping treasures. Catering to the horsey set, A.A. Callister, a fourth-generation family-owned retailer, specializes in Western and English tack, boots, hats, gear, gifts, home decor, and more. Black Sheep Wool Co. features fine natural yarns and accessories. Near downtown hotels, British Pantry supplies foods, chocolates, drinks and gifts. Moriarty’s Antiques and Curiosities, downtown, serves as the valley’s largest antique mall. Golden Braid Book Store, on South 500 East, serves as a quarter-century old independent spiritual icon with psychic counselors available. The Gateway, downtown, features more than 100 shops, nearly a dozen restaurants, the historic Union Pacific Depot, and Olympic Legacy Plaza.
Downtown’s Historic Trolley Square, with a Hard Rock Café, has 80 shops and restaurants in a trolley-car barn, with free walking tours and free parking. Fashion Place, anchored by Dillard’s and Nordstrom, Meier & Frank, and Sears, has more than 120 stores and restaurants. Opening in 2006, downtown’s Crossroads Plaza also is anchored by Nordstrom. Undergoing redevelopment, ZCMI Center Mall on South State Street has stores and eateries remaining open. Foothill Village, on south Foothill Drive, features eateries, spas and salons, and more than 30 specialty shops. Gardner Village, near historic Gardner Mill, has shops, restaurants, and a day spa. Bargain hunters head for Costco Wholesale on South 300 West.
